The morning matches in the 2014 World Beach Volleyball Champs have decided the ‘last 8’ in both
men and women.
In the men draw, the French Thiercy/Di Giantommaso caused a major upset beating the Norwegians
Sannarnes/Berntsen 2-0 set (21-14, 21-18). However, Norway will still be represented in the
quarter-finals, with Sorum/Mol winning against the Brazilians Andre/Vinicious 35-33 in the first set
and 24-22 in the second.
In an equally close encounter, the 2012 U19 Winners Bryl/Kujawiak from Poland earned a hard-
fought victory, beating the Germans Wickler/Schneider in 3 sets (21-18, 19-21, 15-11). The all
Russian affair between Leshukov/Margiev and Yarzutkin/Stoyanovskiy was also decided in the final
set (18-21, 21-19, 15-11), giving the green light to Leshukov/Margiev.
Today’s women’s matches offered suspense and excitement to the cheering viewers. The US team of
Hughes/Claes beat the Russians Dabizha/Gorbunova by 2-0 set (21-15, 23-21). In another encounter,
the Lithuanians (Dumbauskaite/Povilaityte) won in three sets against the Ukrainians Sulima/
Udovenko (18-21, 21-9, 16-14).
Achieving a win at the third set, as well, the Canadians Bukovic/Miric knocked out the Polish
Kociolek/Gruszscynska (19-21, 21-13, 15-12). Besides, the Swiss team Betschart/Eiholzer defeated
the Austrian twins Strauss/Strauss 2-0 set (21-17, 21-15).
